Abstract
•The influence of laser current intensity on surface integrity of laser surface melted 20CrMnTi steel gear has been discussed.•The distribution mechanism of lubricating oil film on the surface of discrete laser surface melted tooth has been analyzed.•The fatigue performance of gears have been significantly improved by discrete laser surface melting treatment.
