A comprehensive review on the cutting and abrasive machining of cemented carbide materials

In recent years, cemented carbide has become one of the most popular materials used for tools and wear-resistant parts because the high strength and hardness. Cemented carbides also are the material that extremely difficult to machine, the high-hard and brittle properties bring huge challenges for the mechanical machining process. Among various traditional machining methods, the abrasive machining processes are the most commonly used in machining of cemented carbide. With the development of super-hard cutting tools, the cutting process also has gradually been used in machining of cemented carbide, especially the precision mold field. The purpose of this review is to offer the latest technological developments in the traditional cutting and abrasive machining processes of cemented carbide. Firstly, the microstructure and development of cemented carbide materials has been briefly presented. Then, the current researches and achievements on the cutting and abrasive machining of cemented carbide materials are reviewed and summarized. The comparison and challenges in different cutting and abrasive machining of cemented carbide are discussed. Finally, the future research directions in machining of cemented carbide are proposed based on the review.
