Effects of male to female Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) interactions on female´s plumage and skin condition

•Female plumage/skin status is linked to male aggression, but not sexual activity.•Females housed with an aggressive male showed poorer head and neck plumage/skin.•Four females grouped with the most aggressive males had worse head plumage status.•Females' head and neck plumage status indicates male aggression levels.
