Evidence supports short-term clinical benefits of adjunctive oral probiotics following scaling and root planing treatment

Subjects or Study Selection A search of 5 electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, SCO-PUS, and Cochrane Library) was conducted through October 24, 2020. The fol-lowing inclusion criteria were applied: (1) randomized controlled trials (RCTs); (2) adult patients with periodontitis; (3) studies comparing scaling and root planning (SRP) plus probiotic supplementation to SRP alone. A total of 1128 articles were retrieved from the database search, from which 24 articles met the inclusion cri-teria and included in the systematic review (SR) and the meta-analysis (MA). The risk of bias in individual studies was assessed using The Cochrane Collaboration's tool.
