Wideband Low RCS Hybrid Metasurface Array Antenna with Circularly Polarization

This letter presents a hybrid metasurface antenna with wideband low radar cross-section (RCS) characteristic radiating circularly-polarized (CP) electromagnetic (EM) waves. To further expand the frequency band of RCS reduction, the high frequency resistive layer is introduced into the antenna element. The numerical simulation shows that the inserted layer has no effect on the radiation performance of the antenna array. Then, the proposed element and its orthogonal unit are arranged in checkerboard pattern, and the metasurface array antenna has a maximum gain of 16.7dBi. The mechanism of RCS reduction depended on absorption and phase cancellation. Compared with the reference array, the proposed metasurface antenna can reduce the RCS at 6 to 20 GHz.
