Abstract
Nowadays, controller area networks (CAN) are widely used in manufacturing systems, while the normal operation of the networks are often threatened by unstable circuit connections. In particular, two typical wiring problems-the intermittent short connection (ISC) and the intermittent open connection (IOC) faults. However, there is limited research on how to identify the two types of faults. Therefore, this paper investigates a method to identify IOC and ISC faults using physical layer information in CAN networks. First, the generalized state parameter equation (GSPE) of the CAN network is derived based on the equivalent circuit model of CAN network. Then, the physical layer response features of IOC and ISC faults are explained by analyzing the network GSPE. Finally, the error event group on physical layer is defined and the identification of IOC and ISC faults is achieved accordingly. Simulations and experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. The results show that the fault type identified by the proposed method agree well with the actual setups.
