Influence Studies of the Flux-Barriers and PM Arrangements on High-Speed Flux-Intensifying Interior Permanent Magnet Motor Performance

This paper investigates the effects of the multi-flux barriers and PM arrangements of FI-IPM motors in high-speed operation for spindle application. A 9 kW conventional FI-IPM motor is used as the fundamental for the investigation. First, characteristics of the air gap flux density, inductances, and saliency ratio variations under the effect of the muti-flux barriers and PM arrangement. Then, the performance of FI-IPM motors, such as torque ripple, CPSR, and demagnetization ability in high-speed operation, will investigate and compare with the original FI-IPM motor. The analysis results reveal that, with the multi-flux barriers and proper PM arrangement, the performance and constant power speed range (CPRS) of the FI-IPM motor will be significantly improved. Finally, a 9 kW FI-IPM motor prototype with multi-flux barriers is made and tested. The experiment results validated the analyses.
