A Fully Integrated Planar Dielectric Rod Antenna Based on SIIG Technology for mm-Wave Applications

This article presents a mechanically stronger version of a Substrate Integrated Dielectric Rod Antenna (SIDRA) for millimeter wave (mm-wave) applications. In the proposed design, the feeding part and the radiating element are embedded in a single-layer planar substrate, thus reduces the integration complexity and production cost. Unlike the traditional SIDRA, the proposed antenna incorporates air holes on both sides of the tapered end of the dielectric rod. The effects of the rod length on the performance of the proposed antenna are also studied. The proposed SIDRA achieves a wider bandwidth, compared to conventional SIDRAs reported in the literature. Results show a -10 dB bandwidth of more than 80 GHz and a stable gain of 12 dBi in the frequency range of 130–180 GHz.
