Acoustic seafloor mapping using non-standard ASV: technical challenges and innovative solutions

The article discusses the use of an innovative Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) developed by CNR-INM for acoustic seafloor mapping. The ASV is modular, portable, reconfigurable, and maneuverable, allowing for low-cost repeated surveys in dynamic areas such as navigation channels and ports. The article describes the challenges and innovative solutions associated with the integration of a multibeam echosounder sensor on the non-standard ASV and describes the first successful test in Venice (Italy) in November 2022. The paper suggests that this system could be a viable solution for accessing and observing shallow waters and difficult-to-reach areas while providing accurate and cost-effective acoustic data gathering for environmental monitoring.
