A dual-polarized and reconfigurable metasurface for manipulation of electromagnetic waves

A dual-polarized and reconfigurable metasurface incorporated voltage-controlled varactor diode for manipulation of electromagnetic waves is proposed. Two varactor diodes are embedded along x- and y-directions, respectively, thus the dispersion response has distinct behavior for different polarizations. Exploiting the anisotropic characteristic, the x- and y-polarized waves can be independently diffused in three dimensions, and the required phase profiles are optimized by the genetic algorithm. Additionally, the functionalities like beam splitting and beam deflection are also presented. All functions can be switched in real time by adjusting the voltage applied on the metasurface from 8.3 GHz to 8.9 GHz. The proposed metasurface has great potential in intelligent stealth missions and wireless communication systems.
