Shipboard Energy System Resiliency Evaluation and Application

Resiliency has become an almost ubiquitous term used in a wide variety of areas of application. Accompanied by the complexity of seemingly endless disparate uses are an almost equal quantity of misapplication and misunderstanding, conflating one term for the other. A discussion is presented to bring some clarity to this improper metric usage. A comprehensive and consistent set of definitions and applications is presented, distinguishing the associated concepts of robustness, survivability, as well as other performance and reliability metrics introducing concepts of priority, significance and criticality and methods to automate these crucial factors especially useful in large systems such as shipboard use. Finally, a future work conceptual database application is described that would facilitate detailed investigations of resiliency both as a historical performance evaluation and a ‘what if’ type analysis.
