Characteristics of lightning activity on high altitude areas from 2500m to 5500m

Lightning stroke is the most important factor that endangers the safe and reliable operation of transmission lines. Most of Tibet, Qinghai and other places in China belong to plateau regions, with the highest elevation of nearly 5500m. The terrain is complex and diverse, and the thunderstorm climate is changeable. Lightning protection is one of the key technical problems in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau area with strong lightning activity and bad geological conditions. The study on the characteristics of lightning activities in the high altitude area of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau is the basis to solve this problem, but there are few related studies. This paper discussed the characteristics of thunder clouds at high altitude, including frontal thunder clouds and air mass thunder clouds. The lightning activity in a typical high altitude area, Tibet Autonomous Region, was given. The lightning characteristics were statistically analyzed. The statistical characteristics of thunderstorm characteristics at typical monitoring stations on the plateau were given and compared with those at plain stations at the same latitude. The thunderstorm activities in different latitudes were comprehensively compared, and the characteristics of lightning activities in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau region of China were given, which laid a solid foundation for lightning protection of power systems in high altitude regions of China.
