Parameter Feasible Region Construction of Generalized Virtual Synchronous Generators with Improved Damping Capability

The emulation of the swing equation in virtual synchronous generators (VSG) causes active power oscillation not only between the VSGs but also in their interaction with the utility grid. In conventional VSG control, the inertia and damping coefficients are often confined by the required rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and steady-state active power–frequency (P – f) characteristics. Active power oscillations can be aggravated under large inertia or small damping. The generalized VSG (GVSG) provides more flexibility to achieve active power oscillations damping without deteriorating the inertia provision and the P - f characteristics. In this paper, a unified GVSG active power control structure based on rational fraction is proposed. Then, the method for constructing the parameter feasible ranges of both single GVSG and multiple parallel GVSGs in grid-connected mode is developed. Real-time simulations based on OPAL-RT verify the effectiveness of the feasible region construction method.
