Design & Operation of Gigawatt Level RBWO Device for HPM Generation in S-Band Frequency

Abstract
Multi-Gigawatt level High Power Microwave (HPM) generation is a very active area of research. Here we are presenting the design and the experimental results of a uniform slow wave structure (SWS) based relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) operating in S-band frequency. SWS is designed by analytical methods and analytical design is verified with the simulation results. A frequency selective resonant reflector reflects the generated microwave in forward direction. Complete structure is simulated in 3D Particle in Cell (PIC) simulations. The expected HPM power is 0.9 GW for 600 kV, 6 kA electron beam parameters. We have experimentally tested this device for 1.4 GW HPM generation at 3.28 GHz frequency for 600 kV, 8 kA electron beam guided by 0.55 T magnetic flux density.
