Near-Field Truncation Error of a Mie-Series for a Perfect Electric Conducting Cylinder

A new criterion for the a priori calculation of the truncation order of a Mie-series for a perfectly conducting circular cylinder illuminated by a TM-polarized plane wave achieving a desired accuracy is proposed. Compared to most existing criteria, the presented formula is not based on far-field quantities but takes into account the truncation error in the near-field at a certain observation radius. Thus, the criterion can be used to determine a truncation order which is neither considerably overestimated nor underestimated tailored to a problem requiring an accurate near-field representation. Numerical calculations prove the applicability for TM polarization with good accuracy. It is shown that the criterion can even be applied for TE polarization using a different coefficient set with only a slightly decreased performance.
