Sleep mediates the relationship between precarious employment and mental health

•Developed a novel precarious employment score using factor analyses.•Most precarious workers were women, younger, single, less educated, and shorter-tenured.•Higher precarity increases the likelihood of poor mental health.•Sleep quality mediate the relationship between precarity and mental health.
