•The addition of lead ions significantly improved the sulfidization on chrysocolla surfaces.•The hydrophobicity of the chrysocolla surface was significantly increased with the addition of lead ions.•Chrysocolla floatability could be effectively improved by the activation of lead ions.•Stepwise activation of lead ions had superior activation than single activation.
