On the best coefficient of performance and specific heating or cooling power combination for adsorption refrigerators and heat pumps

•A criterion is needed to set the best balance between COP and SCP or SHP of adsorption systems.•A criterion is proposed based on the minimum cost of the unit of the obtained useful effect of the adsorption systems.•Proposed criterion is illustrated using two application examples.
