Mechanical properties and meso-structure of concrete under the interaction between basalt fiber and polymer

•The interaction between polymer and fiber on matrix strength is analyzed.•The bridging effect of fibers can slow down crack development and improve the integrity of the specimen at damage.•The polymer products bonding film between fiber and matrix is observed.•The increase of the number of cracks in the failure stage shows three stages of change.
