Characterization on the mesostructural distribution of asphalt mixtures via digital image processing and relation to macroscopic performances

•The distribution of voids and skeleton microstructure of six kinds of asphalt mixture is analyzed and evaluated from multiple aspects.•Establish the link between the mesostructure of asphalt mixture and macroscopic properties.•Different macroscopic properties of asphalt mixtures are characterized by specific mesostructural parameters.
