•The quadruple-shelled hollow Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4/RGO hydrogel are fabricated.•Freestanding anodes with high areal loading exhibit excellent performance.•The oxygen vacancies enhanced capacitive effect and provide more reactive sites.•The full-cells harvest high reversible capacity and robust cycling stability.
