Advanced Packaging Methods Used for Energy Storage from Intermittent Renewable Sources

We propose an electrostatic method of energy storage that combines integrated high-voltage sheet capacitors with advanced power management electronics integrated using advanced flexible hybrid electronics to produce compact (similar to m(3)) energy storage cells that store a few kWh of usable energy with high efficiency (>80%). In this paper, the following four topics are discussed: 1) dielectric material characterization including dielectric constant and breakdown voltage for rollable capacitors, 2) FEM simulation to know the optimal 3D structure of electrodes for the rollable capacitors to enhance the capacitance, 3) fabrication of the high-voltage sheet capacitors with deep trenches using a thermal compression molding technology, and 4) circuit design for a DC-DC converter from intermittent renewable sources.
