•Carnosine could effectively alleviate the development of NAFLD in mice fed a high-fat diet.•Carnosine could activate brown adipose tissue secretion of Nrg4.•Nrg4 inhibited the expression of the SREBP-1 protein in the liver to reduce blood lipids.•Nrg4 inhibited the NLRP3/NF-κB pathway to reduce the secretion of inflammatory factors.
