•MPs ingestion caused oxidative stress in tilapia gut cells.•PLA caused higher damage to tilapia gut tissues.•PLA ingestion induced greater gut microbiota dysbiosis.•The identified gut metabolome biomarkers were related to immune and oxidative stress.
