Adjusting news accuracy perceptions after deepfakes exposure: Evidence from a non-Western context

•We test if people adjust news accuracy perceptions after being exposed to deepfakes.•Those exposed to a deepfake lower their positive news accuracy perceptions.•Those exposed to an informational video do not lower their positive news perceptions.•News accuracy perception adjustments are not dependent on cognitive ability.•The study highlights the risks associated with deepfakes for news scepticism.
