•Having more positive views of the effects of COVID-19 on social relationships was associated with reductions in depression, stress, and PI.•Having more positive views of the effects of COVID-19 on healthy diet was associated with reductions in rates of depression, stress, and PI.•Having more positive views of the effects of COVID-19 on income was associated with decreases in depression, anxiety, stress, and PI.•Having more positive views of the effects of COVID-19 on health was associated with decreases in rates of depression, anxiety, stress, PI, and NI.•Positive views of the effects of COVID-19 on religion were associated with depression, anxiety, stress, PI, and NI.
