Self-consumption Optimization of Balcony Solar Systems Using a Load-controlled Battery Storage

Abstract
Installing an energy storage system with a full-scale solar plant in houses is currently common practice. Doing the same for small balcony solar plants consisting only of one or two solar panels and a grid-tie inverter plugged into a standard power socket is rather uncommon. The popular belief is that this is neither necessary nor can it be economical. This paper shows that the self-consumption rate without storage is often significantly below expectations and presents an economically viable solution to greatly increase self-consumption that has already been successfully tested under real conditions for a year.
