•The fretting fatigue resistance of 2024HDT alloy connector is improved by 9.05% after SPF.•The plain fatigue resistance of SPF samples is further enhanced after SPS post-treatment.•The failure mode changes from fretting to plain fatigue after SPF and SPF + SPS.•SPF + SPS2 produces the highest fatigue resistance due to lightest surface damage.
