•A comprehensive review of Deep Learning v techniques for PV power forecasting, is presented.•Most competitive techniques for PV forecasting for researchers, solar industry and distributed Power companies are identified.•A comparison of standalone and hybrid deep learning techniques shows that hybrid models yield higher accuracy.•A combination of deep learning architectures for extracting spatiotemporal information are found to be more competitive than ANNs.•A novel Deep Learning Network Model for solar photovoltaic power generation forecasting, is presented.
