•This study is one of the few population-based studies on stroke risks from Africa.•Risks of stroke were prevalent in the population but were underestimated by the MFSRS•Obesity, gender, occupation and education influenced risk of stroke in the population•Public education is needed to reduce the risk of stroke in this population.
