Mechanisms and therapeutic actions of edible fruits in inflammatory bowel disease: A review of pre-clinical studies

•To be exploited as a source of medication derivatives against IBD, edible fruits include bioactive chemicals such as alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, phenolics and polyphenols, saponins, tannins, terpenes, and anthraquinones.•Edible fruits modulate the cellular signaling pathways (IL-6/JAK2/STAT3, NF-κB, PI3K/Akt, MAPKs and NLRP3 inflammasome).•The use of edible fruits as a source of preventative and curative lead chemicals can help to find more new drugs for IBD.
