•A novel AgTNP@TiO2@Ag core-satellite composites with SERS activity and photocatalytic property was developed.•AgTNP@TiO2@Ag composites could sense MB at low concentration of 10−9 M.•AgTNP@TiO2@Ag composites in situ SERS monitor photocatalytic degradation of MB under UV light.
