Depression increases the risk of mortality among people living with diabetes: Results from national health and nutrition examination survey, USA

•More than a tenth of adult Americans were found to have depression or diabetes.•Mortality risk was 1.70 times higher among people with diabetes.•People living with diabetes and depression had an even higher mortality risk than those without depression.•Sociodemographic characteristics modify the relationship between diabetes, depression, and mortality risk.
