Residents’ attitudes toward refugee integration: The role of shared identity and refugees’ perceived openness to novel experiences

•Refugees’ openness and a shared identity improve right (vs left)-wing participants’ attitudes.•This three-way interaction was also found for residents’ willingness to help refugees.•Meta-analytic syntheses for these effects revealed small but significant effect sizes.•We thus see an interplay of residents' political views and refugee perceptions.
