Fabrication of TiNiFe alloy produced by mechanical alloying and conventional sintering

Abstract
In this study, the 50Ti48Ni2Fe (at %) alloy is fabricated by mechanical alloying and conventional sintering. The elemental titanium (Ti), nickel (Ni), and iron (Fe) powders were dry-milled by dual drive planetary ball-mill without process control agent under Ar atmosphere and compacted at 400 MPa pressure for 4 mins and then sintered at 1150 °C for 4 hr under Ar atmosphere. The phase formation, microstructure, and composition of milled powder and prepared alloy are studied by XRD, SEM, EDS, and Elemental mapping. XRD analysis and SEM image of sintered alloy show the formation of (Ni, Fe)-rich and Ti-rich intermetallic phases with some pores. The physical and mechanical properties of the sintered sample were analysed by porosity, density, hardness and wear study. The sintered sample showed 65.81% relative density, 20.91% porosity and 423.96VHN hardness value, and also hardness value decreased with increasing applied load. The wear resistance decreases with increasing load due to the more abrasion effect at high loads. An Abrasive wear mechanism has been found from the SEM image of the worn surface of the wear sample.
