Elucidating the promotional effect of ultra-low Zn content on Cu for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

摘要
•Addition of ultra-low amounts of Zn to Cu (Zn/Cu = 0.01) increases methanol formation rates.•On ultra-low Zn content catalysts, surface CuZn alloy sites are detected.•CuZn inhibits CO desorption and favor methanol through RWGS + CO hydro mechanism.•At higher Zn content, Cu-ZnOx sites predominate favoring the formate pathway.
