•Carbon-doped g-C3N4 composite synthesized via a two-step polymerization technique.•Carbon-doped g-C3N4 composite showed superior activity CO2 conversion to CO and CH4.•CO yield over Carbon-doped g-C3N4 composite was 4.6-fold of g-C3N4.•Carbon enhanced the performance of g-C3N4 by generating more electrons and holes.
