•m6A-modified mRNAs are enriched in stress granules.•m6A-modified mRNAs and their readers facilitate stress granule formation.•m6A modification promotes cap-independent translation of mRNAs under stress conditions.•Both SG-associated proteins and m6A-modified mRNAs are abnormally deposited in neurodegenerative diseases.
