•Liquid lignin-based epoxy resin (BLER) produced from untreated kraft black liquor.•The curing of mouldable BLER to form lignin-based thermosets (BLER-MA)•BLER-MA had Young’s modulus and tensile strength of 1 GPa and 40 MPa, respectively.
