•It is the first time to test the effects of AG8 on CSCs of TNBC.•AG8 inhibited hypoxia-induced mammosphere formation of BT-549 cells.•AG8 inhibited hypoxia-induced cell migration and invasion by stemness regulation.•AG8 decreased the expression of OCT4 and SOX2 without affecting HIF-1α and c-MYC.
