Facile synthesis of regenerable NaY zeolite adsorbent relying on alcohol-terminated compounds for efficient trace sulfur dioxide capture

•NaY zeolites are prepared by a facile strategy from alcohol-terminated compounds.•The alcohol additions facilitate efficient crystallization while expanding the microporosity.•Na+ and Si/Al-OH of NaY zeolite encourage SO2 to be firmly grasped within the framework.•The acid-base interaction between zeolite and SO2 further enhances the adsorption.
