•Depressurization followed by CO2-N2 injection for CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration.•A pilot-scale investigation on the combined processes at South China Sea NGH condition.•Spatio-temporal evolution of mixed CH4/CO2/N2 hydrate formation was investigated.•Hydrate saturation reverts back to 50%-70% of its original after mixed hydrate formation.•Employment of horizontal well enhanced the storage of CO2 after CO2/N2 injection.
