Aspects of luminescence nanoprobes for thermometry: Progress and outlook

•This review provides an outlook about methods and luminescent materials used for thermometry sensor.•We summarize the recent progress in developing, designing, and constructing luminescence thermometry using novel luminescent materials.•The review covers the different luminescent materials used for temperature sensing or thermometry; lanthanides doped materials, quantum dots, core@shell nanomaterials. organic fluorophores, hybrid nanomaterials.•The cross-fertilization of ideas and experiences at these interfaces will certainly induce important and exciting breakthroughs in future years.
