•Cytokines play crucial roles in the immune system reaction following tissue injury and/or body invasion by infectious or non-infectious bodies.•The effect of many natural products manifested their anti-inflammatory properties via diverse molecular mechanisms to have potential roles in treating or alleviatingsymptoms of different forms of cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, microbial-induced inflammation or drug-induced cytotoxicity.•Extensive research is still required to improve extracted bioactive natural compounds' poor stability, aqueous solubility, and bioavailability.
