•CO2 electroreduction has been carried out in gas phase in a PEM type cell.•Metal-free catalysts can be a promising alternative for CO2 electroreduction.•Formic acid is the main product obtained with rGONB.•Slightly higher CO2 conversion rate with rGONB than with Cu/rGO.•CO is the main CO2 reduction product obtained with Cu/rGONB.
