•The beta-ray induced X-ray (BIX) spectra of tritium in Al and Fe were simulated.•The BIX spectral shape depends on the solid material and the atmosphere.•The BIX spectral shape contains information about tritium depth in a sample.•In some cases, the tritium depth cannot be evaluated by analysis of the BIX spectra.
