Scoping review of clinical studies on Chinese herbal medicine against Helicobacter pylori and an exploration of its usage pattern

•Effective options are needed for antibiotic resistant Helicobacter pylori infections.•This scoping review identified 165 studies of Chinese herbal medicine for treating Helicobacter pylori.•Chinese herbal medicines were often used alongside the western medicine triple therapy and bismuth.•The most common formulas were Banxia Xiexin, Huangqi Jianzhong, Huanglian Wendan and Jinghua Weikang.•An updated systematic review evaluating Chinese herbal medicines for Helicobacter pylori is indicated.
