•Fracture behavior and energy efficiency of silica were studied at the atomic scale.•Applying loads perpendicular to pre-crack with higher energy efficiency.•The energy efficiency with pre-crack was up to 6.69 times that without pre-crack.•Stress concentration is an important factor to improve energy efficiency.
