Study on the brightness and graphical display object directions of the Single-Gaze-Gesture user interface

•Backgrounds with brightness slightly lower than 50% can benefit both usage performance and user preference.•Subjects favored the light target, although sometimes its efficiency was less than that of the dark target.•Physical predispositions of saccades were found.•Gaze gestures with upward directions had the highest efficiency.
