Production in Nicotiana benthamiana of a thermotolerant glucose oxidase that shows enzybiotic activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus

•A fungal glucose oxidase was efficiently produced in Nicotiana benthamiana.•The apoplast-targeted recombinant enzyme was easily purified from plant tissues.•Plant-made enzyme displayed optimal catalytic properties at broad pH and temperature.•This work stablishes a green alternative to fungal fermentation to produce glucose oxidase.•Plant-made glucose oxidase exhibits remarkable bacteriocide activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
